THE PROPERTY

The Colonial Estate is a 75-year-old home and horse property nestled on 5 acres at the base of Mt. Diablo in Clayton, CA.  The home is not a commercial property but was clearly built for entertaining and has hosted many events from weddings to conferences over the past 30 years. Craig and Susan Lee purchased it in late 2015 after many years of deferred maintenance on the house, stable and grounds. They are the third owners of the home and are working to both restore and update this hidden gem. Their focus is on hospitality, and according to their guests, it shows.

As their private residence, they restrict use to friends and family or referrals by a friend or family member. Furthermore, Contra Costa County restricts the number of events that have over 75 people on the property to very few, and they require a special permit. Logistically though, groups of 200 can easily be accommodated.  The purpose for this website is two-fold. Due to the number of requests received to host events here it is more efficient to refer people to the website to see both what it entails and what the restrictions are. Secondly, it is a fun home and is constantly being transformed and utilized in creative ways by both us and our friends and this is a great way to show that.

The home has several locations outdoors to accommodate groups, however parking is limited to 90 cars. The primary area for a dinner or reception for a large group is the back yard which features artificial grass, comfortable afternoon shade, market lights for the evening and a very large brick patio for quiet music and dancing or other activities. There is plenty of room for a caterer to set up or a food truck to park. Other areas that would be appropriate for wedding ceremonies would include the front lawn, the garden alcove or even the horse pasture for the rustic look.

There are two main areas for use inside the house in addition to the two bathrooms, the Great Room and the Dining Room. These may be used in a number of ways and are often used as meeting rooms for small corporate meetings or parties. The great room can seat approximately 40 for a sit down dinner. There is an espresso bar available.  The master suite and balcony have ample room for a bridal party to get ready, take pictures and relax. The groomsmen have access to the Study and Trophy Room, which can also be used as a meeting room for other types of events.

Small events, such as this one featured in the blog Style Me Pretty, for friends and family can be especially memorable and beautiful.

Ceremony Sites

In addition to the grass lawn in front of the house, we have several locations in the pasture and over the creek that offer a blank slate for the bride to design her perfect ceremony site. Unlike commercial properties, our property is available for multiple days prior to your wedding to store decor and set up the ceremony site. Many friends rent decor items such as arbors, chandeliers, columns, wine barrels, antique furniture, wedding platforms and picture backdrops.
